“My credit card balances are overwhelming and I need help consolidating my debt.” “I love my new job, but I need a car to get there.” These are some of the typical reasons we hear from borrowers at Jewish Free Loan. Sometimes in life you need a little help to make your dreams come true. The founders of Jewish Free Loan had this noble and empowering vision when they created this agency.
So many of us grow up wanting to be independent. However, when we realize we need assistance, sometimes that requires swallowing some pride and applying for a loan. Although cliché, the phrase “it takes a village,” is a philosophy that the founders of Jewish Free Loan in Phoenix and throughout the country understood. When our founders established the agency, they adhered to the Talmudic mandate from Parsha Mishpatim that states, “one may not derive personal benefit from giving a loan to a community member who is in need.”
We are proud that Jewish Free Loan has upheld that principle throughout its sixty-year history in our community. One last significant item about Jewish Free Loan is our repayment rate of 98%. That means that the money donated by our founders is still helping people, 60 years later!
