In a course on respect vs. invalidation, there is a teaching that encourages students to see everyman as a wise, holy man. They are told to not judge others for things they may or may not possess. In many ways our mission to provide interest-free loans, with dignity, allows us to practice that teaching. Oftentimes borrowers are pushed to ask for a loan because others are depending on them. We have witnessed what it feels like for our borrowers when they make wise choices to help themselves. In instances when we provide a loan to an individual, their family members also benefit from it in untold ways.
The concept of humility is indefinable. Yet when borrowers ask for help from our agency, which is based on assisting those who seek assistance, we feel humble. We are also
extremely grateful to our donors for taking the time, having the intention and carrying out the deed of writing a contribution to Jewish Free Loan. We are also tremendously grateful to institutions like the Jewish Community Foundation, who provide funds to help those affected by the current economic crisis.
What a wonderful virtue to teach our children; do not judge others for anything they may or may not possess. In that way, they may acquire wisdom that lasts them a lifetime.
When I was at a doctor’s appointment today, he asked about the student loans offered by Jewish Free Loan. He has a relative that lives in another city and wanted to encourage them to use their local Jewish Free Loan organization. “Interest-free?”
When I assured him it was, he then asked what our payback rate was. I told him it was 98%, and he was shocked. “Well, it sure beats a bank loan, right?” It certainly does.
We are reading more and more articles about young people graduating from college with a great deal of debt, and high interest rates on that debt. You are giving students sound financial advice when you suggest they contact Jewish Free Loan regarding an education loan. There are only 14 days left to apply for the fall semester. You are doing a good deed when you tell a Jewish friend or relative that has a student going to a university about interest-free, education loans at Jewish Free Loan. If they are Arizona residents, suggest they visit our website at www.jewishfreeloan.org to learn more.
We must find ways to instruct students about finance, credit and interest before they attend college so that if this is the first time they have access to a credit card, they understand what interest means and when they are applying for loans, they are familiar with interest rates. There are many examples that come up everyday that provide opportunities for learning. It is never too soon to begin the process of teaching.
Hooray for Arizona now requiring high school students to take an economics class beginning with the class of 2012. One class won’t necessarily provide all the information our youth needs to learn about finances, but it is a step in the right direction. Many students are graduating with a college degree and no job opportunities in sight, education debt and in a worst-case scenario, credit card debt. This combination can mean a young person today is facing a lot of pressure in this challenging economy.
What can we do with our own children today? Help them by educating them about finances. Have them read the fine print on credit card agreements and keep balances as low as possible and limit the number of credit cards they use. A recent article regarding youth in debt suggested that youth maintain a budget. Delay instant gratification when purchasing an item; take some time to ponder what the expense of the item does to your budget and to help control impulse buying.
The article also stated that youth should consider homeownership as a “smart long-term financial strategy.” They go on to recommend attending college as an “investment in your future.” You can receive assistance with rising tuition fees by taking an interest free education loan with Jewish Free Loan. This makes good economic sense for anyone today. Finally, set achievable money goals such as paying off small balance credit card debt first. An interest-free loan from Jewish Free Loan can also help consolidate debt.
